Ingest Excel Spreadsheet Content with the Ingest Service Excel Adapter

Many of our customers manage their metadata with spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel. Excel provides a durable, transferable, and easy-to-use method for adding, editing, and removing metadata on large amounts of media content.

Ingesting media content stored in an Excel spreadsheet requires an adaptable approach. In Excel, every spreadsheet often has a unique column structure that may start with the video and the thumbnail file names, and then include a host of other important metadata items including video title, categories, tags, availability dates, long descriptions, target countries, and more. In each circumstance, nearly every customer has a unique way of structuring Excel columns and headings that map to their own work-flow and content requirements.

Introducing the Excel Ingest adapter

To help our customers take their unique Excel data organization and ingest their content directly into mps with minimal disruption to their workflows and business structures, we developed an Excel ingest adapter.

Using our Groovy script Excel adapter, mps takes in your Excel spreadsheet content and makes it available for delivery, including syndication to your media outlets and players. This process saves you time and effort by avoiding the need to manually convert your own Excel files into XML or MRSS. It also saves you the effort of building and maintaining your own scripts to handle the conversion processes. You can just use one of our Excel adapters and get the job done with the Ingest Service.

Steps to configure the Excel adapter

In order to use the Ingest Service Excel adapter, we recommend that you contact your Account Manager. Our team will work with you to configure the Ingest Service to work with our Watch Folder service, in which you set up an FTP location where you can drop updated Excel files that are ingested automatically into our system. We will then work with you to create a custom Groovy script that maps our system to your Excel spreadsheet’s column headings. Once this file is ready, it is added to the Ingest Service and you can begin dropping Excel files into your Watch Folder.
